Team Member wins big during Green Week 2009
Recently, Berlin Building Supply (BBS), and their sister stores, Campbellsport and Kiel Building Supply had “Green Week” to celebrate their commitment to Green Building Practices and the company’s commitment to green environmentally and energy efficient practices. Green Week coincided with Earth Day as well as Arbor Day. A special challenge was offered to their 78 full time team members: How can they go “more green” within the workplace? If their idea could save the company more than $500 a year they were eligible to win a $1000 travel voucher. Dozens of entries were received. Five entries were able to be implemented. Steph Gatzke thought of powering down computers at night. Stacey Durand and Michaelle Snuggs “thought paperless;” weekly goal sheets are now put on a dry erase board and not printed. Bob Westphal thought of a gas efficiency saving plan. Wendy Falevsky implemented a plan to do payables with a much shorter paper trail. The randomly selected winning entry was from Berlin’s Rich “Curly” Beder, of Berlin, who recommended fluorescent compact bulbs in their “Custom Cabinetry” Design Centers. Rich Beder, a Berlin resident, and yard foreman at Berlin Building Supply does not have any specific plans for his award. Rich says he was just happy to help the company and the environment at the same time. Over 75 light bulbs are being replaced in the design center, saving thousands of dollars over a four year period. The numerous bulbs had generated so much heat in the large “Custom Cabinetry” Design Center in Berlin that last year the air conditioning ran even in the month of January. Berlin Building Supply, is planning a 4,500 square foot addition for 2009 to enhance their already large Custom Cabinetry Area. It will be one of the largest cabinetry design centers in the State of Wisconsin. Many green building products and tactics will be used in the project (including CFC light bulbs.) BBS is a community focus and service committed building supply center serving markets from the Fox Valley to Wautoma and Green Lake.
